FEAR LOSES POWER WHEN GOD IS YOUR REWARD
After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward- Genesis 15:1
Fear is one of the most common struggles among believers. Fear of failure, fear of loss, fear of the future, fear of rejection. Even strong faith can coexist with real fear. In Genesis 15:1, God speaks directly to Abram’s fear and reveals a powerful truth: when God is your reward, fear no longer has the final word.
Abram had just fought a dangerous battle against multiple kings. Though victorious, he was vulnerable,physically, emotionally, and politically. It was in this moment that God appeared and said, “Do not be afraid… I am your shield, your exceeding great reward.” God addressed Abram’s fear before addressing Abram’s future.
Abram was obedient, courageous, and faithful—yet afraid. This teaches us that fear is not proof of unbelief. Even great men and women of faith experienced fear, but they did not allow fear to control their obedience. God does not shame Abram for his fear; He reassures him with His presence.
God did not remove Abram from danger immediately; instead, He revealed Himself as Abram’s shield.
A shield stands between danger and the one being protected. When God is present, fear loses its authority. Psalm 27:1 declares, “The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear?”
Fear grows when our security is tied to things that can be lost money, people, position, or health. But when God is your reward, your foundation cannot be shaken. What cannot be taken away cannot be threatened. Romans 8:31 reminds us, “If God is for us, who can be against us?”
God told Abram, “I am your shield.” This means God personally takes responsibility for Abram’s safety. God still stands as a shield for His people today guarding hearts, minds, destinies, and futures. He does not promise absence of trouble, but He promises presence in trouble.
As believers must learn to confront fear with truth. Fear is defeated not by denial, but by trust. When fear arises, we remind ourselves who God is and what He has promised. Faith grows when we choose trust over panic and prayer over anxiety.
