“Fix Your Focus”
“Let your eyes look straight ahead; fix your gaze directly before you.”— Proverbs 4:25 (NIV)
Focus is one of the most valuable things you can have in life. We live in a world full of noise; phones buzzing, emails flooding in, constant entertainment, and endless distractions. Our minds are often pulled in a hundred directions at once.
But God designed us to live with focus, to have our attention and energy centred on what truly matters. What you focus on shapes your thoughts, decisions, and, ultimately, your destiny.
The following are the benefits of Focus:
- Focus Determines Direction. “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” —Colossians 3:2
What you focus on will determine where you go. In Matthew 14, Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking on water toward Jesus. As long as he kept his eyes on Jesus, he did the impossible. But when he looked at the wind and waves, he began to sink.
Peter’s problem wasn’t the storm, it was his shift in focus. Likewise, we often start well , we believe God, we trust His promises but then we start noticing the storms: the bills, the criticism, the uncertainty. When your attention turns from Christ to circumstances, faith begins to fade.
Lesson: If your focus shifts from Jesus to the storm, you’ll start to sink. But if your eyes stay fixed on Him, you can walk above what used to drown you.
- Focus Requires Discipline
“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 3:14
The Apostle Paul was a man of deep focus. He knew what he was called to do and refused to be distracted by lesser things. He said, “One thing I do.” (Philippians 3:13). Notice, not many things. One thing.
We live in a time that celebrates multitasking, but spiritually, multitasking can dilute your power. You can’t run a race while looking back, scrolling through your phone, or comparing your lane with someone else’s.
Paul’s focus was on the eternal prize — knowing Christ and finishing his course. That kind of focus takes discipline. It’s not natural; it’s trained.
You stay focused through:
▪︎ Daily time in God’s Word – keeps your mind renewed.
▪︎ Prayer – keeps your heart aligned with God’s will.
▪︎ Community – keeps you accountable and encouraged.
▪︎ Boundaries – keeps distractions out and priorities clear.
Lesson: You can’t stay focused accidentally, it’s a daily decision and a spiritual discipline.
