Getting Rooted in Christ
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
— Colossians 2:6–7 (NIV)
If you’ve ever seen a strong, towering tree, it’s easy to be impressed by what’s visible above the ground — the branches, leaves, and fruit. But the real secret to that tree’s strength lies hidden below the surface. Its roots go deep into the soil, drawing water, minerals, and stability.
In the same way, as followers of Christ, our spiritual health depends on what’s happening beneath the surface — in our hearts, our habits, and our relationship with Jesus.
Without deep roots, even the tallest tree will fall when the storm comes. Likewise, a believer who isn’t deeply rooted in Christ can be shaken by fear, temptation, or disappointment. But when we’re grounded in Him, nothing can uproot us.
Paul’s instruction in Colossians 2:6–7 gives us a picture of a life that doesn’t just believe in Christ — it’s built upon Him and draws strength from Him.
What It Means to Be Rooted in Christ .
▪︎ To be rooted in Christ means:
▪︎ Dependence — drawing spiritual nourishment from Jesus daily through prayer, worship, and His Word.
▪︎ Stability — standing firm in truth, even when the world shifts and values change.
▪︎ Growth — allowing God’s Spirit to transform us from the inside out, producing spiritual fruit.
▪︎ Roots don’t grow overnight. They develop through time, consistency, and endurance. In the same way, our relationship with Christ deepens through faithfulness — in good seasons and hard ones.
