Go Forth and Stand Upon the Mount
1Kings 19:11 – Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the LORD.” And behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake;
In today’s bible passage, God commands Elijah to go and stand upon the mount. This was right after Elijah proved to the whole of Israel that Jehovah is the true God at the contest on Mount Carmel. After the contest, Jezebel swore to kill him and he was afraid and ran for his life. This was the same Elijah that prayed and the heaven was shut up for three and a half years, the same Elijah that God used to do many wonders, the same Elijah from whom Elisha got his double portion. A woman threatened him, he got scared and ran away.
Is it a crime to be scared? Absolutely not. Even Jesus, when He saw the suffering before Him, asked for the cup to pass away from Him. So you see, being scared is a natural thing but the problem is staying scared. Fear is never of God. Bible scholars tell us that there are 365 “Fear nots” in the bible which means that God intends us to have a daily dose. The problem with Elijah is that he stayed in the valley and could not see the next move of God. Most of us stay too long in the valley of fear, worry, anxiety, faithlessness, etc. You can’t see what God is doing from that valley. You need to go forth and stand on the mount.
It doesn’t matter who you are, as long as you are human, there’s always a problem to deal with. The bible says in the book of Job that man, born of a woman, is full of troubles. The victory of yesterday notwithstanding, the challenges of today will show up. Challenges are opportunities to test your faith, your character, your resolve, your determination. Just as a student cannot run away from exams, no human can actually avoid problems and challenges. But how do you confront them?
You need an elevated position to function properly as a child of God. You need to stop looking up to your problems. You need to start looking up to God and looking down on your challenges. You can’t do this if you are not on the mountain. The mountain is also a figure for the place of prayer. Stop staying in the valley with your problems. Go forth and stand on the mount. Stand above that situation and speak to it.
