It is By His Mercies
Lamentations 3:22 – Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.
When we hear people talking about the mercies of God, we are quick to think about sin. We always find a way to fit mercy and sin in one sentence. While the mercy of God is necessary for the remission of sins, mercy is much more than a panacea for sin. In actual fact, everything we are and have is by the mercies of God.
We are alive because of God’s mercies. We can afford our daily bread because of His mercies. We have our children and spouses because God is showing us mercy. We have got our parents, friends, and colleagues because we are enjoying God’s mercies. Some people in our age grades have died; others are hospitalized with feeding tubes. We are not healthy because we are better than them or observe better hygiene. We are just here because of God’s mercies.
It is mercy that speaks for us when our words and actions could have put us in trouble. It was mercy that saved you when that drunk driver would have run over you. When that slashing was going on in your workplace, it was mercy that spared you. When you could have been hurt by that expired product, God’s mercy shielded you. When you were facing that panel about that allegation, you weren’t spared because the investigation was thorough; it was rather because God’s mercies spoke louder than judgement.
When you applied for that job, you didn’t get it because you are the most qualified among all the applicants but because God decided to show you mercy. When you embark on a journey and return safely, it is not because you drove very carefully or because your driver was so smart. It is because God showed you mercy. We cannot overemphasize the importance of the mercies of God.
The mercy of God is something that we should invoke on ourselves every single day of our lives. Lamentations 3:22 tells us that it is by the mercies of God that we are not consumed. It is by God’s mercies that we live. Let us hold on to God’s mercies – it is our only preservation and sustenance.
