Know Your Shepherd
Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want
Psalm 23 is one passage of the scripture that every child in Sunday school can recite. However, we do not go beyond the childhood recital to meditate and understand that passage as we ought to. We are called upon today to deeply reflect on this scripture so that we can enjoy the full promise of God that is hidden there.
A shepherd is someone who takes care of sheep. He leads the sheep out in the morning and brings them back at dusk. He plans the way they would go and ensures that they do not lack pasture. He loves and care for the sheep, and in return, the sheep trusts and listens to him. He will never allow any of the sheep to be in harm’s way, and he knows their needs before they even know they have a need.
A shepherd is someone who has an oversight of you, takes care of you, looks after you, and expects you to be accountable to them. If the Lord is your shepherd, it means that you cannot just do anything without first seeking His approval. You have to try to understand His will and purpose for you at every point in time. You must seek His opinion concerning every situation. In summary, you must know Him.
How do you know the shepherd? At this point, I like to believe that you have given your life to the Jesus and accepted Him as your lord and personal saviour. If you have done this, the rest is easy. Knowing the shepherd involves encountering Him daily in His word – the bible – and in the place of daily prayer and fellowship. This way, you will be able to know His will for your life and walk in it.
You also need to belong to a community of believers where you listen to other people, especially your pastors and ministers, expand the word of God and fellowship with the brethren. It is in knowing the shepherd that all your needs will be met and all your fears calmed. It is in walking with Him that you will find green pastures and still waters. It is in following Him that you will find restoration and rest for your soul.
Confession

To know the shepherd, you need to encountering Him daily in His word, daily prayer and fellowship. The shepherd knows my need even before I know i have a need. Hallelujah!

To know your shepherd, you must fellowship with him, other believers through prayer, the word consistently.
