My Peace I Give You
John 14:27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
God knows the importance of peace in human lives and relationships. This is why during the final days of Jesus, He said, “I give you my peace. I do not give you peace as the world gives.” Jesus recognises that there is a peace that the world gives but He quickly adds that He will give us peace differently from what the world gives. You might be wondering how the world even gives peace at all. I will tell you quickly.
When there is an international unrest or war between two countries, like the one between Russia and Ukraine, governments go about pushing papers and signing treaties of peace. Most often than not, the peace mediators are doing so because of certain economic, political or financial interests that will benefit them. More so, their peace is usually short lived. This isn’t the type of peace that Jesus Christ promised us. Some philosophers have told us that peace isn’t just the absence of war but the presence of conditions that foster healthy coexistence. The peace that the world gives is fragile at best.
Before Jesus was born, the Prophet Isaiah described Him as the Prince of Peace foretelling that He would come to take away everything that threatens our peace. When He walked on the earth, He healed diseases, gave sight to the blind, delivered people who are bound by evil spirits, and even raised people from the dead. After all of these, He signed the most powerful peace treaty with His blood by offering Himself as a sacrifice through the hands of the eternal spirit. This is the supreme sacrifice that sheds peace and hope into our hearts.
What this means is that circumstances should not make us fret because the price of our peace has been paid in full. Peace is an internal thing; it is not dependent on what is happening around us or what people are saying. Even though everything around us is quaking, we should let the peace of Christ guard our hearts. Jesus was in a boat with His disciples and there was a great storm but He was sound asleep in a corner of the boat. This is what peace can do! Let the world around you be turning upside down, let the people be scampering around. Jesus’ peace is there for you; shield yourself with it.
