One Thing Is Needed
Busyness has become normal, and being overwhelmed is often worn as a badge of honor. Yet Scripture gently challenges us to pause and examine what our busyness may be costing us spiritually.
This devotion invites us to reflect on our priorities. Are we so focused on doing things for God that we forget to be with God? As we listen, may the Holy Spirit help us recognize the difference between what is good and what is necessary, and lead us back to the place of intimacy with Christ.
The story of Mary and Martha is deeply familiar, yet endlessly revealing. Both women loved Jesus. Both welcomed Him into their home. Both desired to honor Him. But only one recognized what was most important in that moment.
Martha was busy serving. Her intentions were good. But good intentions can still lead to spiritual distraction. Martha became overwhelmed, anxious, and frustrated not because the work was wrong, but because her focus had shifted.
Mary, on the other hand, chose stillness over busyness. She sat at Jesus’ feet. She listened. She received.
Jesus did not condemn Martha’s service. He gently corrected her priorities. “You are worried and distracted by many things,” He said. “But one thing is necessary.”
In the life of the church, we must hear this truth clearly. Activity must never replace intimacy. Service must flow from relationship, not replace it. When we lose spiritual focus, we may still appear productive, but our hearts grow weary.
God does not ask us to do more; He asks us to draw nearer.
Stillness before God is not wasted time, it is sacred time. It is in His presence that our hearts are aligned, our burdens lifted, and our focus restored.
