Redeeming the Time

Ephesians 5:15–16 (NKJV)- “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil.”

Time is one of the most precious and limited gifts God has given us. We can’t store it, stretch it, or relive it. Once a moment passes, it’s gone forever. That’s why Apostle Paul’s instruction to “redeem the time” carries such weight—it’s a divine reminder that how we spend our time reveals what we truly value.

The word “redeem” means to buy back, to rescue from loss, or to make the most of every opportunity. Paul wrote these words to the Ephesian believers during a period of great moral darkness and social upheaval—much like today. His message still rings true: in a world filled with distraction, deception, and spiritual decay, believers must live wisely and purposefully.

Keys to walking wisely and purposefully.

  1. Walking in Wisdom.

Paul begins this exhortation by saying, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise.”
To walk circumspectly means to live with careful attention—to be alert, discerning, and deliberate in our choices. Wisdom doesn’t happen by accident. It comes from aligning our hearts and habits with God’s truth.

Wisdom asks:

Is this the best use of my time?

Does this bring me closer to Christ or pull me away?

Am I investing in things that will last for eternity or merely chasing what is temporary?

Proverbs 4:7 reminds us, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” Every decision—how we spend our mornings, handle interruptions, or respond to others—reveals whether we walk in wisdom or folly.

  1. Making the Most of Every Opportunity.

The phrase “redeeming the time” is also translated as “making the most of every opportunity.” Every day God places before us divine moments—opportunities to encourage someone, share Christ’s love, serve selflessly, pray fervently, or simply grow deeper in fellowship with Him.

Yet these moments can slip by unnoticed if we’re distracted by busyness or consumed by lesser things. Time doesn’t need to be filled to be fruitful. It needs to be surrendered to God.

Jesus modelled this perfectly. Though His earthly ministry lasted only three years, He lived each day in step with the Father’s will. He never rushed, yet He never wasted time. Even when the crowds pressed in or the disciples misunderstood, He remained focused on His mission—to do the Father’s work (John 9:4).

To redeem the time, then, is to follow Christ’s example—living intentionally, guided by purpose, and responsive to the Spirit’s leading.

Confession:
Lord, teach me to number my days, that I may gain a heart of wisdom. Help me not to waste the precious time You’ve given me, but to use each moment for Your glory. Open my eyes to the opportunities around me—to love, serve, and grow in You. When I am distracted, draw me back to what truly matters in Jesus’ precious name.
