Rest From Struggle and Self-Effort
Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28
Many of us are not tired because we are doing too much, but we are tired because we are carrying life alone. We wake up already bracing ourselves for the day, rehearsing what could go wrong, calculating how to hold everything together.
Over time, striving becomes our default posture. We confuse effort with faith and busyness with obedience. But Jesus does not invite us into a better strategy for managing stress; He invites us to rest. His call is not to try harder but to come closer.
Rest from struggle begins when we recognize the difference between obedient effort and anxious striving. Obedient effort flows from trust; anxious striving flows from fear. One is partnered with God, the other attempts to replace Him.
Self-effort says: “If I don’t push, it won’t happen.” Grace says: “If God is in this, He will sustain it.”
When we live from self-effort, even good things become heavy. Ministry becomes pressure. Work becomes identity. Relationships become performance. But when we rest in God, the same responsibilities are carried with a lighter soul because they are no longer carried alone.
Rest is not the absence of activity; it is the absence of anxiety in activity.
Jesus speaks of a yoke that is easy and a burden that is light. A yoke implies work but shared work. When we are yoked to Christ, He sets the pace. He carries the weight. He determines the direction. Rest comes when we stop resisting His rhythm and align our lives with His grace.
The Scripture reminds us again and again that God does His best work when we stop striving and start trusting. Rest is not giving up. it is handing over.
Confession;
Father, in the name of Jesus, I lay down my need to strive, prove, and control. I confess that I have trusted my own strength more than Your promises. Forgive me for carrying burdens, You never asked me to bear. Teach me how to rest in You in Jesus’ precious name.
