Strength in Weakness
“But He said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” – 2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)

In a world that often emphasises strength, success, and independence, it’s easy to feel like we have to keep up with the pressure to always be strong. We’re conditioned to think that weakness is something to be ashamed of or avoided at all costs. We put on our “strong faces,” hide our struggles, and try to power through challenges on our own. But the Bible offers a very different perspective on weakness.

In 2 Corinthians 12:9, Paul shares something profound—God’s power is made perfect in our weakness. This verse doesn’t just comfort us during difficult times; it flips the narrative entirely. Instead of hiding our weaknesses, God invites us to bring them to Him so that His strength can be made visible in our lives.

There’s a powerful story of a man named Mark who was struggling with chronic illness. For years, he battled health issues that drained his energy, limited his activities, and often left him feeling helpless. At times, he wondered why God hadn’t healed him. Why did he have to face this weakness? Why couldn’t he just be strong and healthy like everyone else?

One day, Mark was reading 2 Corinthians 12:9 and felt God speaking directly to his heart. He realised that God wasn’t calling him to ignore his weakness or pretend it didn’t exist. Instead, God was calling him to embrace his weakness and allow His strength to shine through. Mark had spent so much time focusing on his limitations that he missed the opportunity to see how God could use them for His glory.

Mark’s perspective began to shift. Instead of seeing his weakness as something to overcome on his own, he started to see it as a platform for God to demonstrate His grace and power. His physical limitations opened the door for him to rely more on God and experience a deeper intimacy with Him. Mark began to boast in his weakness, not because he enjoyed suffering, but because he knew that through his struggles, God’s power was being made perfect.

This doesn’t mean we should wish for weakness or seek out struggles. Weakness—whether physical, emotional, or spiritual—can be painful. But what we can learn from Paul’s words is that in our lowest moments, God’s grace is sufficient. When we acknowledge our weakness, we make space for His power to work in us and through us in ways we could never achieve on our own.

Think about the most challenging season you’ve faced in life. How did God’s strength show up in that moment? Perhaps it was through a comforting word from a friend, a timely scripture, or an unexpected breakthrough. God’s grace is sufficient, and His power is made perfect in our weakest moments.

When we embrace our weaknesses, we stop trying to be our own saviours. We stop leaning on our own understanding and start depending on God’s limitless strength. The key is recognising that our weaknesses don’t disqualify us—they actually make us more qualified to receive and reflect His power. It’s in our moments of vulnerability that God’s strength shines brightest.

In your own life, whatever weakness you’re facing today—whether it’s health, a broken relationship, a financial struggle, or emotional pain—know that God is with you in it. His grace will carry you through, and His power will be made perfect in your weakness.

Confession:

“I am not defined by my weakness, but by God’s grace. I embrace my vulnerabilities and invite God’s strength to shine through. I trust that His power is made perfect in my weakness, and I surrender my struggles to Him. In Jesus’ name, Amen!”
