The Friend Every Man Needs
John 15:15– No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from my father I have made known to you.
There is this popular song that almost everyone knows. The title is ‘What a friend we have in Jesus’. The song was written by Joseph Scriven in 1855. Imagine a song that was written such a long time ago still having such great power and impact after so many years. The song echoes the value of friendship, much more friendship with Jesus.
In our walk on earth, we cannot overemphasize the importance of godly friends. In fact, we need friends to fulfil destiny. David needed the friendship and confidence of Jonathan to be able to find himself in the palace. Even the bible tells us in Proverbs 27:17 that as iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
We need friends for many reasons. For example, our friends defend us when others accuse us; they share information and opportunities with us; they encourage us when we are down; they bail us out financially, when we are not able to meet up; they pray for us; they keep us company when we are lonely; they inspire us; they see the good in us even when we cannot see them; the list is by no means exhaustive.
If our earthly friends can do all these for us, how much more Jesus? He is our friend and more – He is our Saviour, Redeemer, Provider, Counsellor, Advocate, Intercessor, etc. Jesus is closer to us than our human friends. We should learn to acknowledge Him in our lives all the time. He is not the friend that stays away when things aren’t good. He is a friend in all seasons of life.
In John 15:15, He calls us His friends. Let us accept His friendship and hold on to Him at every moment of our lives – in good times, in bad times, and in ugly times. He is not leaving us. He has promised that He will be with us till the end of time. He is the best friend we can ever ask of.
