THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD
Psalms 23 v 1- The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
According to the dictionary, a shepherd is one who tends, feeds, and guards flocks of sheep; while a Lord is someone who rules over His subject. Combining these two definitions, we can say that Jesus rules over our lives, and He tends us, feeds us, and guards us as His sheep. Psalm 100:3 confirms us as the sheep of His pasture. Therefore, as a sheep, our responsibilities are that we must be in total subjection to the leadership of Jesus. This is because a sheep does not have his own will but follows where the Shepherd directs him to go. We must always seek to hear His voice and follow Him alone (John 10:27-28).
As we follow Jesus as our shepherd, He provides all that we need; that is why the Bible says in Psalm 23:1 THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD I SHALL NOT WANT.
When we put our trust and faith in His leadership and guidance, He will supply all our needs. In phillipians 4 v 19, it reads ‘The Lord shall supply all my needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus’.
The Shepherd supplies safety, security, and food for the soul and food for the body. The Lord Jesus Christ, my shepherd, says in Luke 22 v 35, ‘When I sent you out without purse and scrip and shoes, lacked ye anything?’. Jesus is confident in His provisions because He depends upon The Father to provide everything He asks The Father for.
Jesus and The Father are one. So He knows He will always provide for us when we ask in His Name (John 11 v 41).
