The Power of the Holy Spirit
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” — Acts 1:8 (NIV)
Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave His disciples a promise that would change the course of history. He told them not to move forward in their own strength but to wait for the gift the Father had promised, the Holy Spirit. This power wasn’t just for them; it was for every believer who would follow Christ.
When the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, ordinary men and women were filled with extraordinary boldness. Fearful fishermen became fearless preachers. The timid became courageous. The weak became strong. This same Spirit still empowers believers today to live victoriously and to witness boldly for Jesus Christ.
What the Holy Spirit does:
- The Holy Spirit Gives Power to Live.
The Holy Spirit enables us to live a life that pleases God. Without Him, the Christian walk is impossible. Paul reminds us in Romans 8:11 that “if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies.”
The Spirit empowers us to overcome temptation, to forgive when it’s hard, and to love when it’s painful. He gives us the strength to keep going when life becomes difficult. The Holy Spirit doesn’t remove every trial, but He gives us the power to endure them with faith and peace.
When the Spirit fills you, you begin to live beyond natural ability. You live in divine enablement.
- The Holy Spirit Gives Power to Witness.
Jesus’ promise in Acts 1:8 directly connects the Spirit’s power to our mission, to be witnesses of Christ. Witnessing isn’t just about speaking; it’s about living in such a way that others see Jesus in us.
When the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples, Peter, who had once denied Jesus, stood before thousands and preached boldly. The result? Three thousand souls were saved in one day.
That same Spirit gives us courage to share our faith, to speak truth in love, and to stand firm in our convictions. We may not all preach from a pulpit, but the Holy Spirit empowers us to shine the light of Christ in our homes, workplaces, and communities.
The Holy Spirit turns timid hearts into bold witnesses.
