The Renewal of the Mind
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God — what is good and acceptable and perfect.” — Romans 12:2 (ESV)
Every day, we are shaped by what we see, hear, and think. The media we consume, the people we spend time with, and even the inner dialogue we rehearse in our minds all influence who we become. That’s why the mind is such a battleground.
Paul understood this clearly. Writing to the believers in Rome, he urged them not to be “conformed to this world” — meaning not to adopt the world’s values, attitudes, and ways of thinking. Instead, they were to be transformed by renewing their minds — allowing God’s truth to reshape their thoughts, desires, and actions.
Renewal of the mind isn’t a self-help process or a positive-thinking exercise. It’s a spiritual work — a partnership between the believer and the Holy Spirit. God does the renewing, but we choose what to feed our minds with.
Truth about renewal of our mind:
- The Battle for the Mind.
The enemy knows that if he can control your thoughts, he can control your life. This is why the Bible repeatedly calls us to guard our minds:
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” (Col 3:2)
“We take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Your thoughts are not neutral — they either pull you closer to God or push you further away. Fearful thinking leads to anxiety. Negative thinking breeds hopelessness. But renewed thinking — thinking rooted in God’s Word — brings peace, confidence, and spiritual clarity.
The world says, “Follow your heart.” God says, “Renew your mind.”
- What Does Renewal Look Like?
Renewal means making new again — restoring something to its original design. Spiritually, it means God reprograms our minds to think the way He does.
When we first come to Christ, our spirit is made new instantly. But our minds — the seat of our thoughts, emotions, and reasoning — need ongoing renewal. It’s a daily process of surrender.
Renewal happens when:
▪︎ We spend time in the Word — allowing Scripture to reshape our thinking.
▪︎ We pray and listen — letting the Spirit convict, guide, and correct.
▪︎ We choose truth over feelings — deciding to believe what God says, even when emotions say otherwise.
▪︎ We reject lies — identifying and replacing false beliefs with God’s promises.
It’s like cleaning out an old house. You remove the clutter, repaint the walls, and bring in new light. The same happens when God renews your mind — old thoughts are replaced by new life and truth.
