The Trap of Pride!
Proverbs 16:18 – “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.”
Pride is a silent destroyer. It often sneaks into our hearts, disguised as self-assurance or success, but its true nature is far more destructive. Proverbs 16:18 warns us that pride precedes a fall; it is a trap that can lead us to ruin if left unchecked. We might find ourselves consumed by the desire to be admired, to control, to trust in our own strength or to prove our worth, but each step we take in pride distances us from God’s grace.
Remaining in the trap of pride as a believer, not only fractures our relationship with God and others, but also hinders the unity of the Body of Christ. Pride feeds on comparison and self-reliance, placing us at the centre of our own universe and can blind us to our need for repentance. In contrast, Jesus, though equal with God, humbled Himself, choosing the cross over the throne (Philippians 2:6-8). He did not come to be served, but to serve (Matthew 20:28). He washed His disciples’ feet, a task typically reserved for the lowliest servant. His humility is the model for every Christian.
Pride blinds us to our need for God and keeps us from experiencing the depth of His love, but as we reflect on Jesus’ life, we are reminded that the path to greatness in the Kingdom of God is not through self-exaltation, but through service, sacrifice, and a humble heart. Humility is the root of righteousness and as believers, it is our duty to protect ourselves from the trap of pride.
So, Pastor Enoch, how do I adopt a humble heart and overcome the trap of pride? Humility begins with a heart that acknowledges our dependence on God. We must confess that we are nothing apart from Him (John 15:5), and that it is only by His grace that we can do anything of lasting value. We are to stay plugged into the Word, which constantly points us back to God and away from ourselves. Pray for God to reveal all areas of pride in our hearts and to helps us grow in humility. When we are humble, we are able to see others with the eyes of Christ, seeing their worth and potential as fellow image-bearers of God and we therefore open our hearts to His transforming grace. Lastly, pride is often a result of forgetting where our blessings come from. Let us practice thanksgiving, recognizing that everything we have is a gift from God.
Today, let us examine our hearts and ask God to reveal any hidden pride. Let us surrender our need for control, approval, and self-glory. May we, like Jesus, choose the humble way—the way of love, dependence on God, and serving others. Then through thanksgiving, we enjoy the victory of overcoming the traps of pride.

PRIDE BLINDS US TO OUR NEED FOR GOD AND KEEPS US FROM EXPERIENCING THE DEPTH OF HIS LOVE, BUT AS WE REFLECT ON JESUS’S ’ LIFE, WE ARE REMINDED THAT THE PATH TO GREATNESS IN THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS NOT THROUGH SELF-EVALUATION, BUT THROUGH SERVICE, SACRIFICE, AND A HUMBLE HEART. Pride often disguises as self-assurance or success, but if left unchecked it is a trap that can lead us to ruins. Every step we take in pride distances us from God. To free ourselves from the trap of pride we need: Humility as it acknowledges our dependence on God, The Word which constantly points us back to God, Prayer we pray for God to reveal all areas of pride and Thanksgiving reminds us that everything we have is a gift from God.
