The Whole Armour of God
Ephesians 6:13 – Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
I am almost sure you have never been involved in a war or physical battle. If you have, you will better appreciate what armour can do for you. However, even if you haven’t had the chance to fight a war, you must have watched one on television. The importance of an armour – a complete armour – cannot be overemphasized in a battle. Without a full armour, you can easily become a dead man even before the battle starts.
As Christians, we are in a war. We are – or at least should be – always fighting. The only difference is that we are not warring against flesh and blood. We are not fighting a physical battle. We are fighting a spiritual war – a war against principalities and powers, against all spiritual wickedness in high places.
We are fighting against a world system that is always antagonistic to the establishment of the kingdom of our God and His Christ. We are fighting against an educational system that forces our children to learn what is contrary to our faith. We are fighting against policies that are geared towards the oppression of God’s people. We are fighting against a media that forces contents down our throats even when we don’t subscribe to them. We are fighting a system that seems to offer us freedom that is contrary to the liberty of the Spirit, thereby putting us into further bondage.
These are the wars we are fighting and they don’t seem like things we can fight using physical weapons. The book of 2Cor 3 tells us that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but spiritual and mighty through God. Our weapons cannot be carnal (physical) because we are not fighting against physical people. To win this warfare, we need to put on the whole armour of God – not some armours; but the whole armour.
We must gird our loins with the truth in order to overcome the lies of the enemy. We must wear the breastplate of righteousness so that our hearts can remain pure from the corruptions all about us. We need to shod our feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace otherwise, the enemy will make people believe falsehood and deception. We cannot compromise with our shield of faith and helmet of salvation else we become victims of the fiery darts of the enemy.
Lastly, we must take the word of God which is the sword of the spirit. This is the only offensive weapon in all the armour. I wonder what a Christian can achieve without the working knowledge of God’s word. This isn’t just a head knowledge of scriptures but a revelation of God’s word which is obtained by meditation and submission to the Holy Spirit. If you must win the battles of life, put on the whole armour of God now.
